Simpson’s collages maintain an element of surprise and visual power page after page. Simpson’s use of repeated motifs mimics the mass production of fashion magazines, and she occasionally includes snippets of phrases taken from the original ads where the images first appeared (“Put on your Afro pony tail and swish those superflies away!”). As Elizabeth Alexander’s recent prose poem on Simpson’s collages eloquently states, 'Black women are everywhere glorious and unsung. Of the book, the collages are simpler but equally as bold, each construction featuring a single cutout with hair rendered in flame or wave-like washes of paint. Here, a page on malachite is conjoined with a 1964 advertisement for the hair and scalp conditioner Raveen (one can almost make out the tagline 'Raveen for lovelier hair' as it scrolls below the portrait). The gemstone collages are presented as vintage scientific plates, the conglomerations of women and minerals. The women’s hair are made up of the crystalline or shiny black stones, honoring the multidimensional quality of natural hair. ” The collages, reproduced one per page within, pair raw gemstones with photographs, mostly of black women, collected from vintage advertisements. It is forest and ocean, its own emotional weather. It is sinuous and cloudy and fully alive. Born in Brooklyn, Lorna Simpson came to prominence in the 1980s with her pioneering approach to conceptual photography. Of Brooklyn artist Simpson, as poet Elizabeth Alexander notes in her introduction to this electrifying monograph of Simpson’s collages: “Black women’s heads of hair are galaxies unto themselves, solar systems, moonscapes, volcanic interiors. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up-she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. “A brave and heartbreaking novel that digs its claws into you and doesn’t let go, long after you’ve finished it” Anna Todd, bestselling authorįrom the #1 bestselling author of All Your Perfects, a workaholic with a too-good-to-be-true romance can’t stop thinking about her first love. Don't miss IT STARTS WITH US, the sequel to IT ENDS WITH US. You'll find all of these and more in the pages of Duke Most Wanted. I've heard that Bradley's other series are better so I may give her another try sometime. The action heats up in the final 1/4 but it is too little too late even though the twist regarding Sophie's identity is entertaining. Graham's sudden realization that Sophie is the love of his life is completely unrealistic and the fact that it stems from her physical transformation presents him as shallow and egotistical. The first 3/4 of the book are boring and drawn out. Her plots are simplistic and her characters superficial and one dimensional, even more so in this book than in the previous two. This series is my first encounter with Celeste Bradley and overall, I'm not impressed. Suddenly, Sophie is in the running for the Pickering inheritance and for the man of her dreams. She never thought to marry let alone set her sights on a duke until Graham Cavendish, the only man she has ever felt comfortable around, unexpectedly inherits a title and a mountain of debt with it. A Twisted Tale, also called Twisted Tales in editions with the complete series, is an anthology series of books based around alternate " What if" spins on classic Disney animated films. Some parts made me wince and others triggered anxiety/PTSD but I feel like the writing style, the frustration with the side characters and the previous love for all prior books really made this book to be a poor experience. I found the decisions they made were completely stupid and not at all someone would do in that situatation(yes it's a book but the seriousness of the entire thing, you'd expect the characters not to be flaming idiots) so at the end, I didn't really care, I just wanted it to be over. In my opinion, you couldn't really get lost in the book.ĭespite the book being quite serious in terms of plot and theme, I found myself not liking any characters(other then William which I LOATHED so that's actually good). The theme of trauma is quite well represented but the impression you get off the blurb isn't what the book actually is about.
